I was really surprised by the hostile reaction, as this was a very gentle way of bringing attention to an issue. When I talked to my mother about the matter (she only learned about the event after the fact) she also seemed a bit surprised, although she did tell me that I nailed Carla's personality. postmormongirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13455759739126093761noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7318606957645672999.post-66913848809736610562012-12-31T10:04:20.846-06:002012-12-31T10:04:20.846-06:00I love Carla.
I got in a long discussion with BJ...I love Carla.

I got in a long discussion with BJ (partner/buddy/roommate/I still don't know what to call him)'s parents. Both of them were so upset that women would be so disrespectful. They really thought that any woman that felt uncomfortable in pants, it was only because the spirit was telling them to do something different... and any woman who didn't feel uncomfortable wearing pants to church, it was because they were too deadened.

But when he pointed out that most traditions are just habit, and really not as important as we make them out to be, they agreed.

I think people are afraid. So they say and do silly things, but once the fear passes, most people will be shaking their heads at themselves. (If they remember at all.)jenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14191688082941672114noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7318606957645672999.post-51547610029492634182012-12-20T16:39:01.759-06:002012-12-20T16:39:01.759-06:00I think the comments speak for themselves - as to ...I think the comments speak for themselves - as to whether this will prompt change or not is another matter.

Thanks for stopping by!postmormongirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13455759739126093761noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7318606957645672999.post-51374334874393685322012-12-20T10:19:54.551-06:002012-12-20T10:19:54.551-06:00I'm sure there are a lot of people that think ...I'm sure there are a lot of people that think this is silly, not Carla of course but the situation. Eventually I suspect a lot more Mormons will agree. The people that wrote those comments might not know enough to be embarrassed by them so I'm almost embarrassed for them. Almost, but not quite. ;-)Zacherydtaylorhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14698044667634105382noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7318606957645672999.post-31648105361777310782012-12-16T18:36:16.745-06:002012-12-16T18:36:16.745-06:00She was a good woman. I have lost touch with her and I think she was devout enough that she probably won't understand why I left - but her honesty was a rare and wonderful thing. postmormongirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13455759739126093761noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7318606957645672999.post-26634263014076131482012-12-16T18:20:31.501-06:002012-12-16T18:20:31.501-06:00I like her already!I like her already!Jenniferhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11580563470552855838noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7318606957645672999.post-20864891195584435942012-12-16T15:56:10.280-06:002012-12-16T15:56:10.280-06:00What a wonderful example for the girls in your war...What a wonderful example for the girls in your ward. It sounds like she became a friend and ally when you needed it. I bet she would be just as welcoming, and proud of you, now as she was after your freshman year!

You are certainly right that what most of us thought would be about as controversial as calling for everyone to wear high heals, turned into something much bigger. The biggest irony to me is that it is the opposition that turned it in to something important. The vitriol is what made major news media outlets pick up the story.

Thanks for sharing Carla's story. (From what you describe of her, I doubt she would have minded if you used her real name.) I am not nearly as brave or well put together, but when I look at women who I aspire to be like, Carla is certainly one of them! :-)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13655197693521484077noreply@blogger.com
